Auricularia mesenterica is very common. It is a small bracket fungus, found mainly on dead tree trunks, were it is performing a useful task in breaking down the old wood. The zonation on the top surface is the result of growth lines, so this particular specimen is probably at least three years old. The underside is dark grey and smooth, and spores are produced here. This, and similar species, are eaten in parts of Europe, in the belief that it will cure various diseases, such as cancer. It is not poisonous, but is rather tough and leathery, and lacks any flavour, so is not one for the pot of the connoisseur!
